In recent weeks, Howard County Bureau of Utilities began importing substantial volumes of water from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) as a trial to measure water distribution system operations. The County will be importing approximately 1/5 of its normal demand from WSSC. During this trial, residents in the North Laurel area of Howard County may experience temporary changes in water taste due to the new source. These changes are esthetic only. The water continues to meet all federal standards.
Generally Howard County imports most of its water from Baltimore. This six-month trial is a first step in addressing shortfalls in the Counties water system as it relates to redundancy. By relying on one source (Baltimore) for all of the County's water, a single failure could cause severe economic and safety impacts as a result of water shortages within the County. To reduce this risk we are looking into building in a second source of supply (redundancy) from WSSC.
I hope you will find this information helpful.
