TEENAGER’S “CAR-SURFING”

TEENAGER’S “CAR-SURFING” SENDS ONE TO
SHOCK TRAUMA

The Traffic Enforcement Section is investigating a “car-surfing” incident
involving three teenagers that took place at approximately 11:37 a.m. today.

The incident occurred on Derby Drive at Winners Circle Way when a teenage
front-seat passenger exited the Toyota Camry he was traveling in and laid
across the roof. The subject lost his grip and flew from the vehicle as the
vehicle traveled northbound on Derby Drive north of Gorman Road, landing on
the pavement.

The driver, front passenger and rear passenger are all 17-year-old male
students from Atholton High School. The passenger on the roof was flown to
the University of Maryland, Shock Trauma where he is listed in stable
condition with non-life threatening injuries.

This is the first car-surfing incident that has been brought to the
attention of the Howard County Police Department that resulted in serious
injury. Car-surfing is a dangerous practice that can lead to serious injury
or death.

The subjects involved will not be identified at this time. The
investigation is continuing by Pfc. Tanhauser. No charges have been filed.
