HCPD Launches "Business Watch"

Howard County police have launched a Business Watch program to encourage local merchants to take a proactive role in deterring crime. Business Watches are being developed for Columbia’s village centers, with the goal of expanding to other business communities.

Modeled after the popular Neighborhood Watch program, the Business Watch aims to build solidarity in the business community and increase information sharing between merchants and police. The benefits are numerous. Merchants who participate will share knowledge of local problems and concerns, facilitate better communications with property management and learn ways to improve the security of their businesses.

Police will keep member businesses updated with e-mails and alerts about local crime trends. Commercial security surveys will also be provided at no charge. To become involved in the Business Watch, merchants are encouraged to visit their neighborhood police satellite office or call 410-313-5790.
