September 2010

October 1 – Hands-free Cell Phones While Driving Becomes Law
On October 1, a new state law takes effect prohibiting a driver of a motor vehicle that is in motion from using their hands to use a handheld telephone except to initiate or terminate a wireless call or to turn on or off the handheld phone.  In other words, it will no longer be legal to hold a cell phone to your ear while driving.  You may talk via Bluetooth, speaker phone or another connection.

October 6 – Choose Civility Symposium
On October 6, from 5pm to 9pm, adults and teens are invited to take part in dialogue and interactive workshops to explore the relationship between civility and democracy. It will be held at The Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia.  Visit choosecivility.org for details and to register for this free event.

October 9 – Men’s Health Fair
On October 9, from 11am to 3pm, county residents are invited to the 2nd Annual Men’s Health Fair at Long Reach High School, 6101 Old Dobbin Road, Columbia.  The goal is to increase health awareness while addressing ongoing health topics related to men.  Prevention and detection opportunities will be provided.

October 10 – Climate Actions Solution Party
On October 10, from 1pm to 4pm, county residents are invited to Celebrating Solutions at Hopewell Park, 9200 Rustling Leaf, Columbia. This event will showcase actions taking place here in our community to reduce our carbon footprint.   Learn how to shrink your own carbon footprint, build the network of people working toward sustainability, and enjoy an afternoon of music, door prizes, informational booths and guest speakers.  For more information, contact the organizers at hococlimatechange@gmail.com

October 15 – 50+ EXPO
On October 15, from 9am to 4pm, join us for this huge event for adults age 50 and older, younger adults with disabilities, their caregivers and family members at Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road in Columbia.  The EXPO will feature over 140 exhibitors, workshops, a health fair, great food, all day entertainment and free shuttle service from the Mall in Columbia.  In addition, there will be healthy aging seminars, an educational series, and re-careering workshops.  Admission is free.

October 17 - Howard County College Fair
On October 17, from 1pm to 4 pm, students and parents are invited to meet representatives from over 120 colleges and universities. It will be held at Atholton High, 6520 Freetown Road, Columbia.

Job Search Assistance and Enhancements
Recently, a new feature was added to the Maryland Workforce Exchange website that uses "spidering technology."  This combines every job search website, employer website, and job posting in Maryland creating a one-stop shop for Maryland job seekers.  You can now search over 80,000 open jobs across Maryland from this one website.  Just go to https://maryland.geosolinc.com/.
